Reality Check

Watching hockey with Ryan
Watching hockey with Ryan last night. I wonder if the Sharks’ snuggie will improve my swag factor?

There’s nothing quite like asking a teenager for their opinion to confirm you are not cool.

Saturday night, Veronica and I were watching the Final Four while Ryan played pickup hockey with his buddies. Since Veronica was glued to the TV and her Kentucky Wildcats (sorry about that, honey) it was my turn to fetch Ryan when he sent a text saying he was all done.

Rather that go upstairs to get my shoes, I spied Ryan’s newest pair of Air Jordans by the door. The shoes were a Christmas gift after he expressed a desire to have the same shoes his friends did and purchased a pair with his own money last year. I was a little jealous when he got them. I always wanted some Jordans when I was his age but I wasn’t industrious enough to save up for them.

Realizing that we wear the same size now (shaddup, I don’t want to talk about it), I slipped on his Jordans. They felt good. I looked forward to showing him what I was wearing when I picked him up.

He climbed into the car, and after telling me about the hockey session, I mentioned that I had a really cool pair of new shoes. He looked and asked if I was wearing his Jordans.

“I am,” I said. “And do you realize that I’m 43 years old and this is the first time I’ve ever had a pair of Jordans on my feet?”

He barely looked up from his phone before offering his reply.

“That’s because you have no swag,” he said.

I couldn’t resist. I burst out laughing and gave him credit for the excellent “roasting.”

Truth be told, I’m kind of glad Ryan views me the way most teenagers view their parents: as hopelessly un-cool. Before he became more comfortable with his peers, I’m not sure he felt that way. But now I’ve been replaced by honest-to-goodness friends on the cool scale.

And I’m just fine with that.

But I’m still going to borrow his Jordans again.

  1. Welcome to the world of uncool parents……however when your kid on the spectrum recognizes and declares you uncool, it’s a great day.
